Are you still studying the Reform Judaism? Not just curious; I am part Jewish (culture and what not?) by both father (Ashkenaz) and mother (Sephardi’ / Marrana); that is neither is Jewish now nor ever has been, but both have traces either clearly documented or very much in evidence (in my mother’s case). I still am studying Hebrew, from time to time to refresh or add to it.

Oh by the way, I am cafe’ ground zer0 if you had not figured that one out. I am not sure and don’t have time today to find out if you also subscribe to cafegroundzero.

Well, let me think for a moment: first I would like to say I admire her because she is very frank, sincere, and honest about who she knows herself to be. Then she is not afraid to share with the house of 43things which has many windows and doors, which is open to anyone in Cyberia who happens to google it, or visits 43things or 43places or 43people for whatever reason. So she is courageous, and I do like that in a person.

She is artistic. She does collage, she is involved in or /and makes great photographs, she expresses herself well in writing.

I cannot lie abou this: what little of her one can see is attractive. Eye perceives her to be beautiful as well as graceful, lovely as well as curious as a cat. If I were to pretend that the avatar is not one which, every time I look at it, evokes admiration and desire. I hope she forgives me for this daring expression which by the way is also tarik’s or jean-pierre’s because each name is an alias of the same person, if you have not figured that out, and by you I mean any reader here already as of the last day of 2007.

Ha ha.

I suppose I could list more. I admire her desire to have and nurture a family. I admire her goals, every one of them, even the John Edwards one although I have a doubt that he can be a viable candidate against the more popular Obama, Hillary, or even Giuliani. (How enough Americans could vote for Romney, Huckabee, or John McCain I don’t quite understand at this point). So anyway, I am left both intrigued, encouraged to inquire more, and glad and proud to know this person who seems good, intelligent, courageous, kind, charitable, and wise.

Happy New Year dear lady Violet!

i had the wonderful wonderful marvelous chance to take a “Masters Class’ with her at UC. It blew my mind to sit next to one of premiere voices of 20th century American Poetry. What i remember most from the class was her emphasizing the necessity of “bringing the world into our poems”, and not only write from a self-absorbed , tunnel-vision stance.

She was, phyisically, a petite, frail, tiny little bird who reminded me of my grandmother. But from her mind, A Force of Nature….

When i heard of her death today, i was reminded of how much i always admired this witty, outspoken, maverick politician. Texans were fools to ever vote her out of the Governorship…

She’s one politician i’d always hoped would make it to the White House, as opposed to our current village idiot…

I will mourn the loss of this truly great lady

because i love to travel too!

A New Day in Drug Court:
Diverting Offenders from Prison and Into Recovery Programs

Every Friday, 47-year-old Ron Gilbert decides the fate of dozens of hard-core addicts who come before his drug court in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. They’re facing time behind bars for everything from drug possession to burglary. He is their last chance to avoid jail.

The goal of Gilbert’s drug court is to divert offenders out of the criminal justice system and into a recovery program where they can stay clean and sober. Treatment rather than punishment.

“A pure addict, what are we going to punish them for? They have a disease. You punish a disease?” Gilbert says. “You have cancer, am I going to punish you because you have cancer? Addiction is a disease. So, by punishing a disease you don’t help them one bit. We just create more people in jail that you and I are paying for that are getting nothing.”

Luckily for the addicts struggling with substance abuse, Gilbert has an enlightened view of those who face him in the defendant’s dock.

“When I was a public defender, one of the things that I did … with my clients, I communicated at least on a level that I felt they could understand me,” Gilbert said. “I talked their language. I never lost that. In this environment, that works for me.”

Hard and Easy Choices:

Before court convenes, probation officers, attorneys and drug counselors discuss each case with Gilbert. The court accepts only 60 people at a time (there is a waiting list), and the staff come to know the offenders personally.

Beyond the court, Gilbert has had personal experience with addiction — he helped a brother-in-law and a cousin struggle through legal and medical issues related to substance abuse.

“I’ve got some experience, as most people do,” Gilbert said.

The court’s program requires an 18-month commitment to stay clean of drugs and alcohol — addicts are subject to random urine screening and must show up for court dates. They are required to attend group therapy and participate in 12-step programs like Alcholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.

To many, the option of the treatment program is an easy choice. But nearly 80 percent of Gilbert’s cases involve methamphetamine abusers — a powerfully addictive substance. And while about two-thirds of the defendants who enter Gilbert’s drug court complete 18 months of sobriety, 20 out the 60 cases Gilbert oversees at any one time end up back in the system..

“You have to imagine how powerful that must be for someone in their mind to logically think this thing through and decide they’re going to use even though the consequences are going to be whatever they’re going to be,” Gilbert said.

“I do get upset when people fail,” Gilbert said. “I don’t like seeing anyone fail. It’s not me. It’s not my staff. It’s them. And I don’t like to see them fail.”

There are some 1,600 different drug courts operating nationwide and they vary in their programs and requirements depending on local jurisdictions. But all have a similar goal — to ease the clogging of the court system by drug addicts facing crimes related to substance abuse. Twenty thousand addicts graduate from drug courts every year, but more than 3,000 of them relapse, are arrested and charged with a felony within two years, according to statistics compiled by the National Association of Drug Court Professionals.

But the outcomes, in Gilbert’s eyes, belong to the people who arrive in his court — whether the outcome is failure or success.

“I have a pat answer and that is that I didn’t do anything,” Gilbert said. “You did it. All I did was give you some tools, some education — gave you and opportunity. You made it happen.”

He’s the first criminal justice official i’ve heard say (& has then followed thru on)

I want to meet her because of the amazingly poignant clarity of her values! When someone can write this beautifully about the deepest things they feel, it’s a gift to all of the rest of us. She has my utmost admiration—and thanks!

Your 42 things list is so original, i just wanted to cheer it all :o) You seem so great…. your photos are amazing…. i admire you :o)
